Maruti Suzuki may not return to producing cars full steam at its Manesar plant before October, owing to the shortage in workforce.
The carmaker is rolling out the Dzire sedan from Gurgaon factory instead of Manesar, due to lack of casual workforce in the core production processes, Manesar factory insiders said.
This follows the massive industrial unrest at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar factory leading to death of one general manager, over 100 people getting hurt and the shutdown. While the paint and weld shop operations are being done at Manesar for Dzire sedan, complete assembly of the models are being done at the carmaker’s Gurgaon factory.
While over 900 permanent workers have reported to work at the Manesar plant, the remaining 1,600 to 1,700 casual workers have been asked to appear for re-joining fitness tests on September 2 and September 9, respectively.
“Casual workers will require two to three weeks training after joining. We expect to restore original daily production levels of 1,900 units only by October,” a Manesar factory employee said. While the Dzire’s final assembly process will continue to be done at Gurgaon factory during next couple of weeks, it has increased logistical costs of transportation from Manesar to Gurgaon factory. An email query sent to Maruti Suzuki on production forecasts remained unanswered.
