DSK to enter mass-market bike segment by next year

DSK Motowheels, which introduced its first superbike Hyosung GT 250R in collaboration with South Korea-based S&T Motors, is planning to roll out commuter bikes in the next financial, a top official said.

“We have firm plans to enter into the growing mass commuter bikes market in the 150cc segment in the first quarter of 2014,” Shirish Kulkarni, director of DSK Motowheels told Financial Chronicle. It will be followed by a 125cc motorcycle by the end of the same financial year, he added.

The 125cc to 150cc segments are amongst the fastest growing and the most profitable segments in the mass-market space. “The top management of S&T Motors with whom I had a meeting in South Korea last week have shown keen interest in launching these mass commuter products for the Indian market,” said Kulkarni. He said the company has chalked out a plan to invest Rs 300 crore in setting up a new manufacturing plant.

“The 150cc and 125cc motorcycles will be manufactured entirely locally,” he said. The firm will also set up a research and development centre. “We are scouting for land at Shirwal, near Pune,” said Kulkarni.

“The 100-150cc mass motorcycle market in India has a bright future as only 60-70 out of 1,000 Indians own a two-wheeler,” Abdul Majeed, senior auto practice leader at PwC told Financial Chronicle.
